Waikato Deaf Units Schools History

Initiating and sustaining a project within the D/deaf community in Waikato is a significant endeavor, one that underscores the importance of our shared history and experiences.

I have been sorting out the idea in each chapter for two projects, and it was never-ending, although many Deaf people told me they would find their photos or write about their experiences through Hamilton Education Deaf Units and the past Waikato Deaf Society Inc. (1956-1999, Dissolved in 2004). I have been waiting to receive any old photos, newspapers, or their stories for a long time. I received a small number of copies from the parents of Deaf Children and former Deaf members/students. I researched archives, including newspaper archives, Library records, and online databases, for Births, Deaths, and Marriages. I interviewed a few Deaf seniors about their experiences with the past Waikato Deaf Society Inc., which was helpful; however, the generation of Deaf ex-members after the 1970s was not as beneficial for the projects.

As I move forward, I have decided to adopt a new approach to the project. This is a significant undertaking, especially as a solo historian and researcher. I am juggling various advocacy areas, collaborating with Social Services during crises across New Zealand, and balancing my personal life. However, I believe that with your support and contributions, we can make significant strides in preserving our shared history.
